Albertville's 1990s-2010s homes and their first repaint
Albertville's neighborhoods between downtown and I-94 went up in waves, and the siding on each wave is a little different. The 1990s homes are the ones to watch: hardboard lap siding and first-generation LP from those years swells at the bottom edges and around the nails once the factory primer wears through, and by now most of those houses have at least a few boards that have gone soft. The 2000s homes lean toward vinyl, which fades but does not rot and can be painted in a color no darker than the original. The 2010s homes are mostly LP SmartSide with a factory finish that holds well but chalks on the sunny walls. Albertville lots are open, with young trees, so the south and west walls take full sun and wind-driven rain works into any caulk joint the builder left short. A first repaint here is a wash, a board-by-board check of the bottom courses on the hardboard homes, new caulk at every window and corner, primer on the worn spots and two coats. If most of the boards are still hard, yes. Hardboard fails from the bottom edge up, so we check every bottom course and the boards under the windows on the walkthrough. Sound boards get washed, sanded, primed on any bare spots and painted. Swollen boards get replaced with new material before paint, which we do under our contractor license. A few bad boards is a repaint; a whole bad wall is a siding conversation.
