Medina's cedar acreage homes
The west and north sides of Medina are where the acreage homes are, and cedar is the default material out there: lap, channel rustic and board-and-batten, stained when new and left to weather. Cedar on a shaded Medina lot goes gray on the north and east walls and silver on the south, and by the time most people call, the stain is gone and the wood is drinking water. That is a staining job, not a painting job, and the difference matters. We wash the cedar, brighten it where it has gone dark, let it dry fully, and put on a solid or semi-transparent stain that soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top of it. Cedar trim, timbers and railings get the same treatment. Where the cedar has already been painted, it stays painted, and we prep it as a painted surface. Either way, the corner boards, window sills and the bottom course closest to the ground are where we find the rot, and those get replaced before anything goes on.
Hamel, the Hwy 55 corridor and Lake Independence
Hamel is Medina's historic core, right on Hwy 55, and the subdivisions that grew up around it in the 1990s and 2000s are big two-story homes with a lot of exterior surface: tall gable ends over the garage, two-story walls at the back, and trim packages that take a full day of brushing on their own. The siding is mostly hardboard or LP from that era, with fiber cement on the higher-end lots, and the work is a wash, a hard look at the bottom edges, caulk, primer where needed and two coats, with a lift for the gables. Lake Independence sits on Medina's west edge, and the homes on the Medina side get lake exposure: dew and fog on the water wall, mildew in the shade, decks and railings that see sun and moisture together. We treat the lake wall as its own job with its own drying time, the way we do on every lake in the northwest metro.
How we work in Medina
Medina is about 20 minutes east of the shop, straight out Hwy 55 to Hamel, with County Road 19 taking us north or south to the acreage roads. The lots are large and the houses are set back, so we stage on the driveway, protect the plantings and the hardscape, and bring a lift for anything a ladder should not reach. On the executive homes the schedule is driven by height and trim; on the acreage homes it is driven by drying time and how much wood we find to replace. Both get our house standard: walkthrough and written estimate with repairs as separate lines, wash, scrape, sand, repair, caulk and prime, then two finish coats, sprayed and back-brushed on siding and brushed on trim. Exterior season is roughly May to mid-October. Daily cleanup and a final walkthrough with you close every job.

The executive homes around Hamel have a lot of interior surface: two-story foyers, open stairwells, tall trim and big kitchens. In winter we repaint those, spray the cabinets and built-ins with a waterborne enamel, and take the stained oak trim to white where that is the plan. Our Medina house has gray cedar siding. Can it be restored, or does it need paint?
Gray cedar can almost always be brought back with stain rather than paint. We wash it, use a brightener where the wood has gone dark, let it dry, and apply a solid or semi-transparent stain that soaks in. Stain does not peel the way paint does, and recoating it later is easier. The exception is cedar that was painted at some point; that has to stay painted. Can you reach the tall gables on our two-story home near Hamel?
Yes. The 1990s and 2000s two-stories around Hamel have gable ends over the garage and back walls that are lift work, not ladder work, and we bring the lift. Height is one of the main things that sets the price on those homes, along with the amount of trim. We plan the tall walls for calm days, since spraying at height in wind is a bad idea, and brush the trim by hand.
Do you replace rotten cedar trim and corner boards in Medina, or only stain over them?
We replace them. Staining over rot hides it for a season and then it comes back worse. Cedar Tone holds a Minnesota residential building contractor license, so soft corner boards, window sills, fascia and deck boards get cut out and replaced with new cedar by our crew before the stain goes on. Each repair is a line on the estimate so you can see what it costs on its own.
